Cabo da Roca

Also known as Cape Roca, Cabo da Roca is a cape and the westernmost point of continental Europe. Located about 40.5 km away from Lisbon, Cabo da Roca is situated in Sintra, a city in Portugal’s Lisbon region. Besides featuring a beautiful landscape, the place is famous for its stunning views of the sunsets. Cabo da Roca is easily accessible by car, which you can park for free at a nearby parking lot.


Sintra is a major tourist destination in Portugal’s Greater Lisbon region. Situated just 18.4 km away from Cabo da Roca, the city is best known for its unmissable collection of castles and historic places. Sintra also plays host to two major events namely, Open de Portugal and Bilderberg Meetings. Points of interest in Sintra include – Azenhas do Mar, Monserrate Palace, Pena National Palace, Praia da Ursa, Quinta da Regaleira, and Seteais Palace.

Cabo Carvoeiro

Located about 116 km northwest of Sintra, Cabo Carvoeiro or Cape Carvoeiro is situated in Central Portugal’s Leiria District. Lying in Peniche peninsula’s westernmost point along the Atlantic coast, the cape is now a natural terrestrial and maritime reserve. The place is also close to Gruta da Furninha, a site where prehistoric remains of a human settlement were found. An 82-feet-high lighthouse is also a popular site among tourists.


Just 29.3 km east of Cabo Carvoeiro lies Obidos, a medieval town settled over a hillock. Situated near the Atlantic coast, Obidos is known for its meticulous preservation of medieval architecture. You can explore its old streets, walls, squares, and the castle, which is also home to a luxury hotel. Besides the pleasing architecture, Obidos is also famed for its Praia D’el Rey golf complex, one of the best golf courses in Europe.

Caves Mira de Aire

Spread across 11 km, the Moinhos Velhos Cave is an important cave system in Portugal. Known for its uniqueness, Portugal’s largest caves are just 85 km away from Obidos. You can explore the caves by opting for a group tour, which is headed by a local guide. As there as well-defined levels with plenty of galleries located in-between, you can spend plenty of time to know more about the caves’ formation and its tiny inhabitants such as beetles and spiders.


Located about 47.1 km northeast of Caves Mira de Aire, Tomar is a historic city in Portugal’s Santarem District. Tomar came into existence in the 12th century following the orders of Gualdim de Pais, the Knight Templar’s fourth grandmaster. Tourist attractions in Tomar include – Castle and Convent of the Order of Christ – a Unesco World Heritage Site, Aqueduct of Pegões, Church of Santa Maria do Olival, Synagogue of Tomar, and Church of Saint John the Baptist.

Buçaco Forest

Also called Mata Nacional do Buçaco or Bussaco Forest, Buçaco Forest is a massive forest area spread across 105 hectares. Situated about 116 km north of Tomar, the forest is home to more than 250 species of various shrubs and trees. Besides the overwhelming greenery, you can explore the ruins of the Bussaco Palace Hotel and the Buçaco convent. Please note that you will have to pay an entry fee of €5 to take your car inside the park.


Situated about 94.6 km northeast of Buçaco Forest, Espinho is a beautiful city in Portugal’s Aveiro District. Forming part of the Metropolitan Area of Porto, Espinho is among the smallest municipalities of the country.
